An old spa is one of the toughest things to remove - here's what it actually takes.

A residential spa can weigh 500 to 900 pounds empty, is hard-wired to a 220-volt circuit (or connected to gas), holds trapped water in its foam insulation, and is far too big to fit in a standard dumpster in one piece. There is no scenario where you set it at the curb and it disappears. So the real question is how you break it down and where the pieces go.
Before anything moves, the spa has to be de-energized. A hot tub is typically on a dedicated 220V circuit; the power must be shut off at the breaker and the unit safely disconnected - electrical work that a licensed electrician should do if you are not certain. Then it needs to be fully drained; a submersible pump makes short work of it, but plan for where hundreds of gallons will go so you do not flood a neighbor or a storm drain.
Once dead and drained, a determined DIYer with a reciprocating saw, pry bar, and a helper can cut the shell into movable sections. Expect:
It is genuinely a weekend project with the right tools, and it is hard on your body and your saw blades.
The reason most people call a junk crew for a hot tub is that we bring the muscle and the tools and do the whole thing: we cut it down on-site (or lift it out whole when access allows), load every piece, sweep up, and haul it away - metal to scrap, the rest to proper disposal. You do not touch a saw. Because a spa is a large-volume job, it is priced as such, and an on-site look gives the most accurate quote given the size, location, and access.
| Task | DIY | Full-service |
|---|---|---|
| Electrical disconnect | You / your electrician | Confirm de-energized before pickup |
| Draining | You (pump + drainage plan) | You drain, or discuss on-site |
| Cutting / breakdown | You (saw, pry bar, helper) | Our crew, on-site |
| Hauling & disposal | Multiple heavy trips | One visit, sorted for scrap/disposal |
Before you cut, ask whether the spa still works. A functioning hot tub - one that heats, holds water, and runs - has real resale or give-away value, and letting a buyer come haul it away turns a disposal cost into either a little cash or, at minimum, a free removal. List it on local marketplace or Buy Nothing groups, be honest about its condition and that the buyer must handle the electrical disconnect and transport, and you may find a taker. Be realistic, though: a spa that leaks, will not heat, has a cracked shell, or has sat empty and weathered for years is almost certainly a demolition job, not a resale. Kicking off a listing that never sells only delays the inevitable, so give it a week or two and then move to removal.
If you do sell it, still confirm the buyer disconnects it safely at the breaker and does not simply drag a live, wired unit across your yard - that is a real shock and injury risk you do not want happening on your property.
The biggest variable is how the spa gets from where it sits to the truck. A ground-level tub with a clear path out is straightforward. A spa on a raised deck, behind a fence, in a screened porch, or wedged into a tight side yard takes more work - sometimes the fastest route is to cut it into sections right where it stands. Tell us the setup up front so the quote is accurate.

No. A hot tub is far too heavy and large for curbside or dumpster pickup and must be disconnected, drained, and usually cut into sections. It is a demolition-plus-haul job, not a set-it-at-the-curb item.
The spa must be de-energized at the breaker and safely disconnected before removal. If you are not comfortable with 220V wiring, have a licensed electrician do that part - then we handle the breakdown and haul.
By volume and labor. A spa is a large job, and the price depends on size, condition, and especially access - a ground-level tub with a clear path is easier than one on a raised deck or behind a fence. An on-site look gives the most accurate quote.
The metal frame and pump go to scrap recycling; the acrylic shell and foam insulation are handled as C&D-style debris. We sort and route each part appropriately.
